With all-wheel drive, you are unlikely to be caught off guard—on the road or off it. Its primary purpose is to maintain maximum traction on both axles, even under adverse grip conditions. The system improves vehicle handling and thereby contributes significantly to safety. Additional advantages are presented in the video by rally driver Emil Lindholm, for whom this type of drivetrain is virtually essential in the competitive world of motorsport.
4×4 in two different forms
Škoda vehicles use two different all-wheel-drive technologies, depending on the drivetrain of the specific model. Vehicles powered by internal combustion engines primarily drive the front wheels, with the rear axle engaged via a propeller shaft and an inter-axle clutch. By contrast, the battery-electric Enyaq and Elroq models do not feature a physical connection between the axles; instead, each axle is powered by its own electric motor.
In both cases, the all-wheel-drive system requires precise control. Drivers can leave everything to the control unit, which continuously adjusts torque distribution based on data from numerous sensors. These monitor parameters such as wheel speed, the current steering angle of the front wheels, and both longitudinal and lateral acceleration. Calculations are performed within milliseconds, and system calibration is fine-tuned by Škoda Auto development experts under the most demanding conditions.
If drivers wish to intervene manually, the SUV models Karoq and Kodiaq offer an Offroad driving mode. This mode adjusts settings such as ABS, traction control (ASR), and other systems to help tackle more challenging terrain. It operates at speeds of up to 30 km/h.
All-wheel drive is available on the Karoq, Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq, Enyaq, and Elroq models. It is always paired with a multi-link rear axle, which enhances overall ride comfort. The sporty RS versions of the Enyaq, Elroq, and Kodiaq come with all-wheel drive as standard. The safety and handling benefits of 4×4 can also be enjoyed purely for driving pleasure on closed circuits. With ESC Sport mode activated, drivers can experience predictable, dynamic handling—something Emil clearly demonstrates in the video.
Among the additional advantages of all-wheel drive, Emil Lindholm also highlights hill descent control. This system allows the driver to negotiate downhill sections on snow or mud without touching the pedals. By using the braking system and engine braking, the assistant automatically maintains a controlled descent speed, preventing uncontrolled skidding and loss of vehicle control.
