Giving star ratings to cars sounds simple enough: five stars means brilliant, one star means avoid. But the truth is rarely that black and white. These days, cars are more alike than different. Build quality has levelled up across the board and safety tech is widespread.
That’s why reviewing cars in 2025 is more about reading between the lines, evaluating how well a car fits its intended purpose, stacks up against rivals, and earns its keep in the real world.
Most cars score a solid four stars: they’re good, sensible, and well-rounded. Three stars means something’s missing, while five stars is reserved for those rare gems that manage to surprise, delight, and justify themselves in a crowded field. Enter the Skoda Elroq, a quietly confident debut that does just that.
The Elroq might not scream for attention, but it does earn a second look with Skoda’s “Modern Solid” design, clean lines and practical elegance.
Inside, it channels the Enyaq’s best traits with a spacious, intelligently laid-out cabin. A 13-inch touchscreen dominates the dash, and while there are some physical buttons, climate controls remain screen-bound. Rear seat space is generous, and the overall interior quality punches above its price.
It’s a practical EV that feels premium and purpose-built. High-quality materials are paired with smart detailing and up to 1,580 litres of boot space with the seats folded.
On the road, the Elroq delivers a comfortable drive. It’s rear-wheel drive for now, with a vRS all-wheel-drive version arriving later in the year. It doesn’t aim to thrill, it aims to soothe. And that’s exactly what most drivers want. Steering is light, visibility is strong, and cabin noise is well-contained. In short, this is a car that makes daily life easier.
There are three battery options: 50, 60, and 85, offering a WLTP range of up to 560 km. That’s more than enough to silence range anxiety. Fast charging from 10pc to 80pc takes just 28 minutes in the Elroq 85, meaning even long-haul drivers will spend more time moving than waiting.
Safety is another strong point. The Elroq is equipped with up to nine airbags and a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems.
